What is capoeira?

Capoeira originated from the slaves that were brought to Brazil from Africa during the slave trade. They mixed their own traditions and culture with those that they found in Brazil, and  capoeira was born.

Capoeira is a mix of martial arts, dance and music, and has been called the dance fight game. Whilst the kicks and flips can be highly acrobatic, don't be put off if you are new to sport and exercise. Capoeira is open to all, and all levels of fitness are welcome.

Capoeira will help increase your fitness - especially flexibility, endurance and balance. You will also get to learn music and songs, as well as the culture, history and philosophy of capoeira.

Capoeira is as much as you want it to be. There is a lot to learn, but you can take it at your own pace.

To start capoeira, you will just need tracksuit bottoms and a t shirt. You will end up spending some of your time upside down, so make sure it's not too baggy so it doesn't end up in your face.
